Watch as I demonstrate how The Mode Decoder simplifies playing The Smiths’ intricate song “What Difference Does It Make?” by effortlessly navigating between B Dorian and B Ionian modes. This tool is designed for guitarists seeking practical solutions to switch modes without delving into complex music theory. The demonstration showcases how to play chords as bar chords and execute the melody using minor pentatonic scale positions, with chords and highlighted melody notes (shown as red dots) aiding clarity.
Text Notes in the Video:
- Verse Mode: B Dorian
- Play the notes in these three positions (based on the minor pentatonic scale), and the Mode Decoder will guide you on where to play them!
- Start with the notes in position 2, beginning at fret 7.
- Feel free to start by playing just the black minor pentatonic notes if you prefer 🙂
- Chorus Mode: B Ionian
- Note that the available note locations are exactly the same but shifted to different frets.
- Your fingers will intuitively remember the locations of these notes, while the Mode Decoder will guide you on which frets to play.
- Verse Mode: B Dorian
- Chorus Mode: B Ionian
- By starting from the relative minor (Ab) instead of resetting the Mode Decoder, we switch from Ionian to Aeolian mode!
- This is a good example of how locations repeat past the 12th fret!
- It’s the 7th fret beyond the 12th, or the 19th fret from the nut.
- It might seem complicated, but it’s really simple once it clicks!
